How to Add Page Numbers to a Finished Word Document

When writing something long like a research paper or work report, some people like to number the pages as they go, while others would just write it first and then worry about the numbering.
If you fall into the latter category, here is the simplest and most effective way to number your pages in Microsoft Word once you have put your document together and it’s ready to go.
Numbering your pages is a great way to keep your work in order and make it easier to reference when sharing it with others.
First you need to open your document. Once it is open, head over to the “Insert” tab and select the “Page Number” option.

From here you will be able to decide what type of page numbers you want and where you want them to appear. As you can see, you can put the numbers at the top or bottom of the page, within the page margins, and other options. Most people choose to put them at the bottom of the page, but you certainly don’t have to if would prefer them to be elsewhere.
Once you make your choice, the “Design” tab will open. Here you will be able to customize the way your numbers will appear in further.

From the “Page Number” menu, you can also head to the “Format Page Numbers…” option to pick what you want your numbers to look like. You can choose Arabic numbers or Roman numerals. You can even uses letters in alphabetical order if you prefer.

To see if you are happy with the way your page numbering looks, go to the Print Preview screen.

And that’s all there is too it. Looking at the Print Preview should give you a good representation of what the file will look like with the numbered pages when you either print it out or send it to someone via email.
